The maze helps you feel the position and movement. What is Nystagmus? is a condition that results in the eyes making uncontrollable or repetitive movements. It is often accompanied by vision or proprioceptive problems. You can also experience blurred vision and focus problems. These movements may occur in one or both eyes, and may also notice problems with balance. or may worsen your symptoms. Types of nystagmus There are two nystagmus: Causes of Nystagmus The causes of nistagm may vary from minor problems with the inner ear to a sign of another underlying medical problem. If I suspect that a patient has nistagm, I can refer them to an opthamologist or neurologist, depending on the initial exam and associated symptoms. Additional tests may include: A common test to check the nystagmus by rotating a person in circles for approximately 30 seconds, and then stop and ask them to look at an object. If the nistagmus is present, your eyes will move slowly in one direction before moving quickly in the opposite way. These tests can check how eyes work and other underlying causes that might be the problem. Treatment Options In congenital nistagmus, gynzolamide eye drops can help symptoms. In some situations, nistagm gets better by itself over time, while at other times it will disappear once the root cause is addressed. Certain medications can relieve the symptoms of eye locking in adults such as baclofen (Lioresal), a muscle relaxant and onabotulinumtoxine (Botox). Although not routinely used, surgery may be done to restart the muscles of the eye. It's not a cure, but it can help reduce the amount an individual needs to spin his head to see better. What You Can Do in HomeWearing Specialized contacts or glasses can sometimes improve visual problems due to nystagmus, such as good lighting, reading large-printed books (or increasing the size of print on the phone or tablet), or using a magnifying device. Participation in that promotes calm and relaxation, such as meditation, can also help. With both types of nistagm, the more generally relaxed a person, the less severe their symptoms.
