But if you're considering going under the knife or needle, you deserve to be informed. In our series, we are breaking down everything you need to know, from injectible to invasive treatments. Choose to change your appearance or not—the point is, the choice is yours. Let's get this out. The procedures for fat are divisive. As — and abolishing the stigma surrounding him — he also grows, so the growing interest in cosmetic and injecting procedures. (According to the most recent data of , the number of liposuction procedures increased by 5% in the last year, while non-invasive fat reduction treatments increased by 6%.) The relationships we have with our bodies are complicated and rarely fall perfectly into a belief system. It is not surprising then that Coolsculpting, a non-surgical procedure approved by the FDA, has become one of the most popular treatments people ask me about. I have worked as an expert on camera beauty for the last eight years, and while it is a misconception that everyone who receives procedures is hypercritical of their appearance or trying to meet idealist beauty standards— I don't feel compelled to look "perfect"—the reality is that I was very curious about it. I, like the others, wanted to know if the fat freeze hurts, and above all about the results. So when the chance to try Coolsculpting came up, I was willing to give him a chance. What if he sculpted my body a little in the process? Great. What's great? The first: it is described as a fat reduction procedure that releases fats. It is not invasive and has very little inactivity time, so doctors often position it as an alternative to liposuction. Scientifically known as criolipolysis, the process involves using a vacuum-like applicator to suck specific areas of fat. Then it deeply frees its fat cells, which eventually causes them to die and be naturally expelled through its lymph system. (Yes, .)Working in the following areas is clarified: under the chin and jaw; in the thighs, abdomen and flanks (i.e., "ass of love"); for the fat of the bra; and under the buttocks and upper arms. The caveat is that you have to have enough fat for the applicator to adhere. The appointments are about 45 minutes long and, at least in my experience, the procedure was not painful. The sensation when the applicator sucks into your skin is extremely cold at first, but your skin is numb, almost like when your foot is asleep. After removing the machine, they quickly massage the frozen area of fat, which most agree is the worst part. Before you know, it's over. I did my sessions with a cosmetic surgeon in Beverly Hills. In total, we made three appointments: one for my chin and two for my abdomen, spaced six weeks apart. It's been two years since I had, and until today, I'm constantly being asked if I would or not again. The short answer is yes, and I would probably treat my stomach and flanks. While I loved my Coolsculpting results, there are some things I would have known earlier to keep expectations in control. Here are eight things you should know before booking your own appointment. Refrigeration does not guarantee that it stays out of fatThe calculation could be approved by the FDA, but does not mean that your fat will disappear forever. If you gain weight, you can see areas that tried to gain weight too. "The fat that died will not return, but fat can still grow," says dermatologist certified by the board, Facile Dermatology Boutique in West Hollywood. Coolsculpting protocol includes weighting before the first treatment in case you have weight afterwards. "If you have won 10 pounds, you could even go out, so you can look just like your 'before' image," he says. For the record, I have earned 10 pounds, and while I had more sculpted results after receiving treatments, new fat has grown since then in those areas. Plan to get at least two treatments In theory, you can see a reduction of fat in areas such as your stomach, flanks and chin in as little as a session. But Ghavami told me. You might even want to book three sessions for larger areas like your abdomen. It takes a few months to see results I remember thinking that I was going to get out of treatment with my magically disappeared fat, but that didn't happen. Ghavami explained that I would see the best results after my second round. "It is expected between twenty-five percent fat reduction after two sessions," he says. "Three to six months after the second session is when you will really see the best results." I was right; one morning, I looked in the mirror and noticed that my chin and stomach were both significantly slower. But you have to be patient. Before cooling in my chin; after a session of Coolsculpting Smaller areas might not be bad when I did my chin, the results were so effective that I could not actually get a second treatment there (because there was no fat available to be frozen). "The applicators are of a certain size, and for smaller areas, if you don't grab it, you can't do it," says Samolitis. In that case, (an injection approved by the FDA, which contains a natural molecule that dissolves fat) could be more effective. But while samitis warns that these side effects tend to last longer with Kybella and the procedure is generally less pleasant than refrigeration. Usually, you need more than two Kybella treatments to see lasting results. Another thing you should know about getting Coolsculpting in your chin is that it's one of the most uncomfortable areas. For me, it felt like having a hand pressed against my throat, so I would advise to give careful consideration to this area if you are claustrophobic or triggered by feeling. This is what looks like the CoolMini Chin applicator device. It is Meant for Stubborn Areas This is not a magic wand to help get rid of all your fat, and it is not a replacement for a healthy diet or exercise. It's really meant for fine fit. "Anybody that is considerably overweight, or that has more than 20 pounds of its desired weight, will probably not be woven by the effects of refrigeration," says Samolitis. "The fetus can still grow. There is no way that Coolsculpting can eliminate 100% of it." Rather, if there is a small and stubborn area you want to soak, Coolsculpting might be an option. Massage is the worst partAfter doctors remove the applicator from your body, they immediately begin to massage the frozen fat package. This is, with much, the strangest and most annoying part of the experience. I can't compare it to anything else I've ever tried, just imagine that your fat has been frozen in a block, and someone must thaw it quickly. It was a strange pressure of feeling from the technician's hands, but not really feeling his touch. Some patients say this part hurts. Personally, I would describe it more as an intense discomfort. The price depends on how many applicators you needYour doctor can use more applicators to impact how much fat is reduced. "You need more angle applicators in different ways to get that sculptor effect," Samolitis says. "People have different fat distribution patterns. Sometimes one person may need three applicators in two rounds, while another may need five applicators in two rounds." I had an applicator in my chin and one in my abdomen for a total of three treatments: one in my chin, two in my stomach. Most of the places that offer cooling charge per applicator, not per session. "Most people offer packages because there is rarely a case in which someone only needs an applicator with a treatment," says Samolitis. Prices vary depending on where you live, but in Ghavami's office, where I received Coolsculpting, treatments in your chin range from $700 to $800 and can normally support only a mini applicator; while the treatments in the abdomen vary from $600 to $750 per applicator. My stomach before, enter, and after receiving two cooling treatments Be careful with Coolsculpting forgeryAs cold concern becomes more popular, forged treatments (without FDA approval) are also increasing. And although the price could be more affordable, they also have the potential to be harmful to your skin. Samitis says that people who try these blows often end with extreme cases of strangulation. To make sure you are being treated with a legitimate device, check against it and always talk to your doctor about your experience managing the treatment.
